Artificial Sweeteners

Hello,

I'm new to this message board, but already have read threw most of the posts...thanks for all your insight!

Dr. Joe has been great to me even without being a client.  I would sign up with him in a heartbeat if the current situation was a little different.  I’m in my second year of competition and have made a ton of mistakes…looking to improve/learn from them!

An answer I've been looking for is related to artificial sugars like splenda, Diet Colas/zero calorie drinks or those used in Whey Protein powders.
How do you feel about consuming artificial sweeteners like splenda and Diet Colas?
As far as Whey Proteins...do you recommend removing these products at some point in the contest prep.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi,

I used to use Splenda as a substitute.  Kori recommended I take it out to see if there was a difference when I was stuck at a specific weight.   I definitely felt a difference.   The weight dropped.  I did not feel as bloated.   Some people are more sensitive to aspartame.   I switched over to stevia, per Joe, and I don't have that bloated feeling.   I can use less, since it is much sweeter.  It is all natural.   I use Sweet Leaf stevia -zero grams on all macros.   I also don't get that nasty aftertaste that Splenda gave.   Joe's protein powder has stevia as a sweetener.  Dymatize Elite Natural also uses stevia as the sweetener. To eat 6 times a day, I need to use a powder 1-2 meals.

I don't drink diet colas.  Water all day and coffee in the a.m. (hence the much needed stevia ;)  Sign up when you can with Joe!!!

Liz

Hi, Tiran!

Artificial sweeteners won't bother people with a fast metabolism, typically, but they can make it harder....you'll have more hunger, cravings, potential hypoglycemia, etc.  I'd cut them to a bare minimum.

Joe do you think there is any physiological evidence to suggest that their consumption will hinder lipolysis for those with slower met rates? Assuming that all macros are accounted for and diet adherence isn't a factor

I just don't see a lot of actual research on the topic at all and I hate to spout off on just theory.  The strongest thing I can say is that I see it with clients all the time.  All the time.
