carb load

I am new to this site, wish I found it 12 weeks ago, been following another " natural bodybuilding" site/company. I was told to carb load my last meal before bed, consuming, 1 c. oatmeal, 6 oz. sweet potato, 4 oz. banana, 1 c. of veggies and 1 tblsp. of butter?  So far I've done this once, it's suppose to be part of a final 6 week diet.. I just read a bunch of articles from Dr. Joe and this carb meal now sounds like a really bad idea? This is my first show and I do not know any better!

Yikes, I don't know that I eat that many carbs in one day, LOL!

You need to portion those carbs through out all meals for the day and then carb cycle so that your body doesn't get used to your daily carb intake.

Thanks for confirming that, I am 4 weeks out and really wish I got to this site sooner!  Thanks, any more advice?  I am still holding fat in the butt and thighs, (no wonder due to the lame diet) but at least I only followed it once this week.  I am barely 5'3 and 104 lbs, I started  taking in 40g.  carbs and plan to load through out the day up to 60-80 2x a week. Does that sound right? I am so lost, and this is not the time to be lost!

to be honest kailua everyone one here is going to be limited in terms of the information they can give you because they really don't know your body. there is nothing like the advice of a person who really understands diet and nutrition like dr. joe.

my suggestion would be to either A- hire someone who knows they're stuff, like dr. joe or B- finish out the 4 wks, learn a ton along the way and chalk it up to experience.

either way were here to help, but the tough part is giving you specific diet advice without having worked with you.

SO today is my high carb day and now that I know that I can not eat junk even if it is within my number range, I am ok with that.

Dr. Joe knows best and i thank him for that. So that being said, I am choosing good foods today such as cream of wheat, peaches, apples. Are these the kinds of foods that are ok for my high carb day Joe?  No pizza or Mcdonalds you said last time so I want to make sure, since I only have 12 more weeks till my competition.

Kaiula, all depends on what you look like, your food intake, and body type.  The only way I'd ever have someone eating that much before bed, a month before a show, is if they were 2.5% body fat and had the fastest metabolism on the planet.  It's certainly going to prevent you from losing body fat.....if that's your goal, all good.

Tina, much better!  : )  Plenty of time for the pizza when the show is over.

Thanks for the input, I feel so special, I posted a question on another forum (same co. who gave me the carb load advice) and never got a response, you guys are great! And no, I am no way near that body fat %, I am two weeks out and should be a little leaner, well I guess this show will be a learning experience for me, I am glad that I found a very informative site.

Kailua!

Good luck with your show. is this your first one?

Joe and Sean have been amazing. I just started with them in Jan. Jan 13, to be exact. it is already been 9 weeks and I have lost a good amount of weight and am on a great meal plan. My first show is June 11. Can't wait to see how I will transform!

Keep us posted !!

Kailua, feel free to email me and even send pictures; I can give you better feedback that way.  You should be able to go to the contact us page and do that.

Tina, absolutely on the peaches, cream of rice, etc.  Bread, fruit, and easy-to-track foods are fine, but when you get into things like pizza, it just gets too hard to know how much fat you're getting, etc.  When the show is over, you want to be able to say there was nothing more you could have done.  Out of an entire contest prep, there are so many variables, but the strongest one is your effort and consistency day to day.  I know you want to wake up Sunday morning with no regrets.  Thanks for working hard to improve; that's what it's all about : )

So many good places to put information on the forum; many threads are similar.  Had a client ask about saving carbs all for one meal at the end of the day - a backload of carbs he termed it from a diet he read about.

My answer:

Ahhh.....the warrior diet....I think I have heard of that one and read about it a long time ago.   Bunk in terms of what you described - for the application of losing weight.  Like I said, the advantages of any big loading meal are obvious - surge in glycogen storage, insulin, anabolic potential, metabolically good, but at the same time all of that good stuff is happening, you're storing new body fat.  It won't be lbs, but ounces, and then the starvation period for your body to save up those cals/carbs isn't worth the boost.  Better to use the same principle, but in moderate doses through the day (pre- and post-workout meals) and through the week (moderately-higher carb days as scheduled.)
