Carb Quality

I know this has been discussed on different threads, but kind of buried under different topic titles.  A client asked what carbs he was "allowed."  My answer:

Carb choices are a little more flexible than you may think.  I want you to keep quality high and be smart when it comes to the glycemic index, but Ezekiel (or even whole wheat/whole grain) bread is fine, fruit is certainly fine up to half of your starch intake, and there are places where higher-glycemic carbs come in handy.  When dieting, it's more a volume issue than you think.  If you're consuming 20 or 30 g of carbs at a meal, will white rice over brown rice make a difference?  Would even pretzels versus oats?  Not likely.  Again, be smart and think quality, but don't get hung up in all the goofy "rules" that people have over what is correct and what isn't. Even things like dairy - what's wrong with it?  Nothing if you're not allergic to it.  I'm not a big fan of cow's milk, but it's not off the table.
