Cardio

I have been all over the place with how much cardio I have been doing, a lot of doubles.  Joe has decided to keep it at singles for now and although I feel I won't get as lean as fast, I need to remember that I am embarking on a process that I will be following for life if I want to get and stay lean.  I certainly can't do doubles forever.  I will save that for the weeks before a show.  I need to tighten up the diet and stick with the singles and it should work out just fine.

I know I am weird, but I like cardio.  It really makes me feel good physically and mentally.  I start to dislike it when it takes over my life and I feel like I am doing it all the time and it zaps me of my energy to weigh train.  That is why I want to get to the point and stay at the point, where I only need doubles for a special event or to get back on track.

Right now I do cardio daily for 40-45 min moderate intensity on varying machines.  I can't run (knee problem), so its mostly elliptical, cross trainer, arc trainer, bike and the step mill if the knee isn't acting up..  I also try and do a couple of shorter HIIT 's per week, again, dependant on the knee.

On that note, time to go down and do my 45 min before I start the day.

Making progress :)

Oh I envy you woman.  I HATE cardio.  I'd rather throw weights around all day & night than to do cardio.  Kudos to you.

Well Jannette, I figure I have to do it, so I may as well make the best of it.  This week I have been keeping my heart rate up betwee 152-154 bpm  (which for my age is about 85% MHR) for the 45 minutes and boy is it tough but I figure, since I am only doing singles right now, I need to make them count..

I was supposed to do HIIT this morning since it was a cardio only day, but my legs were so sore from leg day yesterday and my knee was stiff, so I ended up doing a little steady state but now I am going down to do, my legs are still sore, but I had a lot of carbs today so I have a lot of energy (and a lot of carbs I need to burn)

Cardio has been cut to 6 days since I am on such a low carb diet.  I feel like I should be doing more, but Joe says to see how I do on this diet for a week and then we can increase if it goes ok.  I always feel like I am not giving my best effort if I don't do cardio every day, but I guess more is not always better.

I did HIIT Tuesday and it seems a lot tougher on low carbs and it even seemed to take longer to recover.  I was still feeling it yesterday, so I ended up doing a longer, slower paced session instead.  I think I am going to limit HIIT to my higher carb day (which is still only 100g) which will work out to be one to two times per week which is how often Joe said to do it anyway.

Limiting the HIIT and doing more LSD sounds like a good plan.

I have been trying to hold off on this strategy because its incredibly time consuming, but now we are down to the wire.  I know that so many people say this method is unnecessary and inefficient, but I can tell you this, it has gotten me super lean the last four shows that I have done.  I am going to start the double cardios.  The morning session is 60 min and the afternoon is 45 min.  I have tried the whole HIIT thing and it doesn't seem to shed the fat  they way it is supposed to for me.  All these articles claim that HIIT is 100x more effective than steady state and I have tried it a zillion times and with MY body its not any more effective than the steady state and it causes a lot of pain in my knee and I am less effective with the second cardio and with leg trainin.

It takes a lot of time.  But it works.  It goes against what everyone prescribes, but I am going to use it because it works for ME.  The only difference this time is that I will replace two sessions with a 60 minute kickboxing class and I think that will classify as some high intensity because we go for 20 minutes at a time with fast paced punching combos and jumping jacks and mountain climbers and push ups.  Non stop.  If nothing else it will make some of the cardio less boring.

So on that note.  Down to get in my 60 min.

Well I totally contradicted myself today, but I had to work on a tight schedule so I ended up being only able to do one session.  In that session I did 25 min of HIIT followed by 20 min mod intensity, so it kind of felt like 1.5 cardios and I really pushed it on the work portions of the HIIT to the point where I couldn't make it through the last 2 seconds of each of the rounds.  Oh well, some days you have to modify.
