Today I managed a 25 min power walk after my second breakfast. Thank goodness it was a little cool out. I hate the heat. Anyway I am going to make a real effort to get cardio in every morning so that it is out of the way.
Cardio talk
That is the only time I like to do cardio. Belive it or not, that is when I have the most energy. My legs feel fresh in the morning and I have an easier time getting the intensity up. Plus, you are right, its nice to get it out of the way.
Very true Annette.
Today I did 2 cardio sessions, I am sure subconsciously influenced by you, lol.
This morning it was a 30 minute power walk and tonight it was 25 minutes of running and walking. I have to admit it feels good. If the weather cooperates and stays nice in the am I will really enjoy continuing in this fashion.
You gave me a good idea. Since Joe said one cardio is enough and I always feel like I should do more, maybe I will do a second session of something easier that I can do with the kids, like take a quicker paced walk. That way I am moving around, but it doesn't take any recovery (in fact I could call it active recovery) or have me dripping sweat 2 times per day (unless its 92 degrees like it has been the past few days). Thanks Jannette, I used to walk everywhere when I lived in the city and I was in great shape then. Its good to just be moving. On that note, let me get away from this computer and down to do my first cardio of the day.
Excellent idea. I am sure that the kids will like it as well.
Yesterday I managed to get an hour walk in. It felt good. If the weather holds up I might try again today.
Last night was hot & humid but I got out for a nice 40 minute power walk. I think I might keep to the night walks until the Fall rolls around. The morning heat doesn't like me.
Tonight I might try to run if all goes well. If not, I might try the bike for a change.
8-11-10: Got a 25 minute walk in. I think it is time to increase the time of the power walks and/or increase the intensity. That will be the new cardio goal.
Feeling the heat from a 30 minute walk on the treadmill. I think walking is going to be my choice for cardio. It might mean doing more but at least I like it and my body likes it better as well.
If I could get away with walking, would love it. It is so much better on the body and joints. Maybe I could try power walking. Those people all seem to be in pretty good shape. It looks tough too, almost like they want to break into a run. When I am able to finally get back to the gym next Tuesday, I will try powerwalking on a hill and see what I can get my heart rate up to. Thanks for the good idea Jeannette
Hi Annette,
After reading your comment, I have to say that if you enjoy walking that much, why not do it? I feel that you will find it hard to keep doing something through the coming years, that you don't really enjoy. By not enjoying what you do, you are setting yourself up for failure somewhere down the line, either sooner or later. Surely, it is far better to do something you enjoy as well, and thereby increasing the odds of staying with it . I have said this before, you just need to perform one or two anaerobic workouts per week, and these are purely for your health. They could even be performed during one or two of these walks. A hill provides the ideal opportunity, as you have already mentioned.
Just my 2 cents worth and good luck, whatever you choose. ![]()
When I was prepping with Joe last year he had me doing 2 40 min sessions of cardio where my HR only needed to be 110-130 and I used the incline walking for that. I would walk at a speed of about 3.8 on a 5% incline and it kept my HR right there. It was a nice kind of "reset" cardio, gave the body a bit of a break, but still kept things moving.
You all make good points regarding the walking.
I have been taking full advantage of the weather the past few days and have been walking as much as possible. It has been a blessing especially since I have not been in the gym due to the pains I have in my shoulder and leg. Until I get to the doctor for a full assessment of the injuries I plan on only doing some walking and concentrating on my nutrition plan. This way, I can still engage my mind in the process and not risk making things worse for myself.
