Detox

I received a question from a client relating to this pretty-common topic.  Many misunderstandings about what detoxing is and what it entails.  Many think it's a magical process that does all sorts of things in your body and people run to "cleanses" and cleansing products every time they have a sniffle or a little gas.  This question was, "I'm about three days into our program/diet and I'm getting tired, a little irritable, etc - am I detoxing?"

Yes, "detoxing" is really a matter of being in a calorie deficit first and foremost.  In a true detox, it's typically a rapid/harsh calorie loss so when you're dropping body fat, you're purging your body of a lot of things.....toxins stored in the body fat cells, stored glycogen and retained water that you're not used to being without, and the ongoing process of losing body fat obviously makes you feel better and truly does "clean you from the inside out" relatively speaking.

The tired/irritable/headache symptoms are part of that transition between depleting your body of the stored carbs and moving into higher percentages of body fat being converted to glucose for energy.  Keep drinking good amounts of water, getting enough rest, keep your meals consistent and well spaced, and after the first week you'll be feeling MUCH better.

That is helpful.  I always shied away from detoxing because I thought it meant drinking some kind of spinach water for 10 days, dropping all kinds of water only to have it come back the second you eat a piece of food.  A quick fix if you will.  But the way you describe it makes much more sense.  Being consistent and clean with food intake while in a caloric deficit thereby dropping the fat, water and toxins that plague our body and make us feel like crap.  That is what I am trying to accomplish now and keeping my focus on how great I will feel, instead of how crappy I temporarily feel will make it all worth while.
