Functional Training

I know I have been talking about it more and more for a loooong while now, but I really want to get back to more of a functional training style.  Years of performing the same locked movements can lead a person to injury, reduced ROM in other areas, and overall leave you unable to perform 'real' strength movements.

Anyway...I finally got in a decent functional training session with Joe, Kori, and Tony last weekend when I was in Indiana for the show.  Joe outlined the workout in his thread, but just to briefly recap, we did a Giant Set of:

7/29/10

Hacks/Sumo Deads (3 in riser)/BB push press/DB curls

Here are some fun pic...a couple of these came from Joe...obviously the ones I am in I did not take!

And for the record...I am fully aware that Kori arms are just as big as mine...dang!!

Laid back European . . . it has been said . .

Good to see great pics like this. The guy doing the Db Bench Presses looks amazingly relaxed. Looks like he's thinking about what to get for the family shopping !

Focus forward...

7/8/10

I only consider this a functional workout because of the total body aspect of the work that we did.  Granted this was a Back and Shoulders workout, the choice of exercises used required leg involvement as well as core, arms and of course the back and shoulders.

Before we got underway with the back and shoulders we did about 8 sets of smith machine calf raises getting up to 405.

Push Press SS Supported HS ISO Rows

Worked up to a few sets of 5 with 135 on the push press (think greg went to 175) and 115 per side on the rows (greg went to 205 I think)

Pull ups SS Supported HS ISO Rows SS Clean and Press SS DB side Laterals

This was good stuff, brought the weight back down a bit on the rows to 85 per side, and took the weight down on the clean and press to 95, wasnt able to move the reps up on either as much as we hoped since we were pretty freaking fatigued by this point.

But the workout was good stuff!
