Home Gym

I have got to the point in my life where I have nothing better to do than thinking about creating a home gym out of my garage. My wife tells me that it is time to get out the pipe and slippers, but I have other plans!

When converted, I intend fitting this out with the most basic of equipment, an adjustable bench, all-in-one dumb bell set, a kettle bell or three, rubber bands, etc. Really simple.

One item I am considering purchasing and that I have seen a video of someone using ( Clarence Bass, in fact ) is a Trap Bar. I had thought of using this to contribute towards my leg and lower back training. The problem is that I have never seen one for real or used one myself. I would appreciate it, if any of you can give me your experience of using one of these. I don't want to waste part a lifetime's hard earned money, if at all possible smiley. It might well be that you consider money would be better spent on an Olympic bar, although of course, these are no cheap item.

These only cost about $150-185 and can really be a good send for anyone that wants to deadlift but not with the straight bar and save your back the pain and agony over time. I love mine at my home gym and really use it a lot and was well worth it for all that i use it for!

One of the best bars I have ever used as the bar keeps you more centered over the weight thus making it less stressful on your back buy it!

It's helpful to have the raised handles - or the one that has both of them.  You can flip it over and have a 4" higher handle or be right in the middle.

Thanks, Mary

I am looking forward to the project. Hopefully I will have it finished and ready for the grand opening of one, by the summer.

To start with, I am considering one of these all-in-one adjustable dumb bell sets, a trap bar ( if I can get hold of one . . . ), an adjustable incline bench, an olympic dumb bell, some olympic plates, 3 varied kettle bells, rubber cable, ab wheel ( I thought these were a gimmick, I've changed my mind ) and a mat. For the aerobic side of things I will use the steep road that leads up to my house. Simple. If all goes well, I may add to this. I really fancy doing some Farmer's Walks, but they are pretty darned expensive. We'll see . . . . anyway, I believe these items will give me a pretty good workout for my purposes.

Have I missed anything here that others might find necessary? I am open to suggestions.

You can get along just fine with very little, but as you can add a piece here and there, you'll value the variety.  My first home gym is where I buried myself for two years of training and emerged to win a pro card.  My equipment:

DB rack up to 100 lb DBs.

Very cheap combo low row cable (had to sit on the floor) and high pull cable.

Squat rack that you could use the safety levers to adjust and make it a bench press.

One adjustable untilty bench.

A combo leg extension/leg curl that used plates; no cable for constant tension.

One door mirror to use when squatting.

A CD player with good speakers.

Two of the most memorable training years of my career.  A small section of an unfinished basement, creativity, and intensity.

Already excited for Fantasy Camp in January!

Sounds like the barn I trained in for almost a year up in Iowa. Not much to it - but that won't stop you from squatting until you drop.

Alan - great call on the trap bar. You will like that addition for sure!

Despite many attempts, I have tried without success to locate a Trap Deadlift Bar for sale in Norway. Needless to say, I will have to import one from the UK. Sometimes this place drives me to despair.

One positive thing lately though, is that in the last month it has become legal to sell and buy glutamine, bcaa's and arginine, although the last not in the form of a NOS product. Maybe another 10 year wait for that one. Anyone fancy emigrating? As I always say, I shouldn't have relocated here, if I couldn't take a joke!  crying
