A perfect time to do NLP training.  It helps you retain muscle and not over-train.

DRod - How are you liking that?  There is so much that can be done / benefits with alternating approaches. (my experience)   After a cycle alternating like that, I've also done a 2:1 cycle ( two weeks volume and the third with strength for the next cycle. )  Strength gains and size gains were huge and rapid (my experience).

Or you can go super complicated and do mine form of nonlinear periodization that occurs in a 3 week cycle, and it's really pretty simple and easy to get once you get going.

Heavy week

light week

medium week

I think this is the best of all worlds for anyone in how it allows you to really hit some good heavy weight, but doesn't allow the body to get fully beaten up, and all rep ranges can be so beneficial for the the many muscle fiber types!

I really do like it so far...Today was strenght legs, and only having to do squats and sldl plus calfs was nice..I was spent from it though. Cause usually when I did squats, I'd do leg press, leg ext....leg curl and sldl and it was 2 hard to finish sometimes..SO this approach seems very nice, especially when dieting.

Something I often do with our clients is a more modified form of periodization. Like any periodization model we have some key things we are looking to improve upon. But rather than have dedicated strength/volume weeks, I combine those things together each week and then structure the overall program to allow for enough recovery between the workouts. What it gets you is the ability to lift heavy as often as possible (thus satisfying the bodybuilders inevitable desire to train heavy) while allowing your body to recover when it needs it.

So when you plan any sort of NLP or other form of periodization for that matter, realize that things are not etched in stone with that. Feel free to integrate new things as you go. If you don't, the effectiveness of even NLP diminishes over time through sheer adaptation and the fact that your body just gets too beat up. Graphed out, those strength gains become parabolic looking. So when you are at the top of that curve, that is when you need to make a change.

Sean could you post an example of the workout you are talking about?

That would honestly be hard to do - because each workout is tied to the next. I would have to post up several weeks of work for you guys to see the big picture. Does that make sense?

Do you have any specific questions about what I am talking about?
