A typical Litvinov training session

I have mentioned elsewhere that I recently read " Never Let go " by Dan John. A great read, at least equal to that of " Brother Iron Sister Steel " by Dave Draper. In his book he makes mention of a gold medal hammer thrower from the World Championships Track & Field in Helsinki, 1983, by the name of Sergey Litvinov.

I have always been impressed by feats of strength and athleticism, but this particular one is a " jaw dropper ", in my eyes.

Weighing 196 lbs, a typical training session for this young man, was to Front Squat 405 lbs for 8 reps, rack the bar and immediately follow this with a 75 sec 400 meter run. Rest and repeat twice more. Easy to say, but I wonder how many men have been capable of doing something like this.

OK, I hear you say, " 1983, he was probably " helped " along the way ". Who cares, so was everyone else!

Last night I had just completed what has lately become my main anaerobic session. Namely, 10 X 70 meter sprints up the steep hill to my house.

Upon completion of the last rep, I decided to try my own version of the Litvinov training session. I reduced the weight, by 90% actually, and reduced the distance by 80%. I then performed 20 reps with 40 lbs on the Goblet Squat and proceeded to " sprint " the 70 meters up to my house. The first 10 meters went OK, but then it felt like my legs were not part of my body and my mind told me that I must resemble a headless chicken running up that slope. I am sure glad it was dark and I was alone. :p

This small experience makes me marvel all the more at that guy's achievement.

Ran a 5k (www.cjsbus.org) with Cameron and Lynnea dominated the kids' dash - good way to start a Saturday!

Haha!  That's funny.  I sometimes do sprints/interval training with upper body workouts, but supersetting sprints with lower-body training is definitely going to feel different.  I'm sure you can condition yourself into making it very fruitful training, but my quads tend to cramp a lot after leg training.  I could see myself biting the dust very quickly!
